Infrastructure Modernization: Global Furniture CET Integration

9thCO performed an infrastructure modernization project for Global Furniture, replacing a legacy AS/400 system with a custom Configura CET API integration and fully interactive product building and 3D rendering experience.

The Challenge

Prior to this project, Global Furniture Group's product catalog was severely limited by its legacy AS400 architecture:

  • Pricing and Configuration Dependencies: Build-it pages for the US and Canadian markets relied on AS400-backed optioning feeds to retrieve pricing and configuration data. Slow response times from the AS400 system introduced significant latency, contributing to delayed page rendering and a degraded user experience.

  • Inefficient Asset Retrieval: Managing visual product assets was cumbersome and error-prone, requiring multiple AJAX calls to retrieve textile thumbnails and names for display. This inefficient retrieval process contributed to delayed rendering times, degraded application performance, and application crashes.

  • Lack of Real-Time Rendering: The legacy system could not provide dynamic visualizations for users. There was no ability to download specification CAD, REVIT, or Sketch files for configured models.

  • Complex and Inefficient Rendering: The selection form was generated on page load using a tightly-coupled jQuery class based script. This implementation relied on a large configuration object and complex networks of interdependent, recursive methods, creating a codebase difficult to maintain. It resulted in a significant increase of implementation and testing time for even minor changes.

The Solution

In order to enable Architects, Designers and Distributors to dynamically customize products, 9thCO implemented a multi-phased digital modernization:

  • Data Restructuring: Rather than duplicating tables, 9thCO maintained the existing database structure and introduced additional flag columns to determine which data should be rendered based on market and locale. This approach supported the integration of CET data while minimizing data duplication, reducing maintenance overhead, and avoiding the need to manage multiple datasets.

  • CMS-Based CET Configuration: Implemented configuration management within the CMS to map multiple product catalogues and generate the required request strings for the CET API. This centralized the mapping logic, simplifying the management of catalogue relationships and supporting accurate product rendering.

  • Hybrid Data Integration: A hybrid integration was developed where Configura CET powered the 3D rendering, while the CMS retained textile data. For stability, the system was built to gracefully fall back to the AS400 Build-it if a CET connection failed or if models had not yet been migrated.

  • Feature and Routing Parity: Maintained consistent functionality and routing across AS400 and CET products, including user accounts, project portfolios, and the ability to create, view, update, and delete saved product configurations. This required coordinating CMS-based cataloguing, CodeIgniter SKU routing, product type identification, and restoring saved configurations into their respective configurators to ensure a seamless experience across both systems.

  • Automated CET Data Migration and Seeding: 9thCO developed a custom CodeIgniter migration combining CSV-based SKU mappings with CET API configuration data. The script automated catalogue population, established SKU-to-endpoint relationships, and updated market-specific availability flags through batched database operations.

  • Custom React UI Components: 9thCO created custom Select components, overriding standard Configura web-ui components. This ensured nested options could be selected linearly and dependent inputs remained hidden until needed.

  • API Validation and Mapping: Accurate mapping between Global's product catalogue and CET's API configurations was required to retrieve and interpret product data. This enabled the front end to process CET's nested JSON responses and dynamically update product configurations based on user selections.

“This project was the single most impactful undertaking in the last 20 years at Global.”
